Borosilicate Glass vs. Regular Glass

Regular glass is made of silica, soda, and lime. Borosilicate glass includes at least 5% boric oxide. That addition gives borosilicate glass excellent thermal qualities - it won’t expand like ordinary glass and can handle sudden temperature changes. Because of its thermal resistance, it remains clear and strong when exposed to extremely high temperatures and won’t melt until 550 degrees Fahrenheit. It can also withstand accidents that would break almost any other type of glassware. In the rare case that it does break, it breaks into larger pieces instead of shattering, making clean up easier and safer. It also has a very high chemical resistance, making it perfect for lab work.
