Winter has a reputation for causing sickness, but we all know germs don’t take the rest of the year off. Bacteria and viruses are everywhere: airplanes, classrooms, laboratories, workplaces, doctor’s offices, money, and doorknobs, just to name a few common areas. When you or a family member have been exposed to germs, it’s good to call in some immunity support. During the time of the Black Plague, a group of thieves successfully protected their immunity with an essential oil blend. The ingredients are rosemary, lemon, eucalyptus, clove, and cinnamon oils. You too can blend your these oils for your own immune support essential oil blend.

Rosemary Oil

Rosemary essential oil comes from the flowering tops of the rosemary plant. Rosemary has made its name in kitchens everywhere, but the uses and benefits go far beyond making things taste good. Rosemary is said to boost your immune system. Rosemary may reduce stress, specifically the stress hormone called cortisol. It may also strengthen your body’s fight against diseases that are linked to free-radicals. Since rosemary has antioxidant properties, it can help ward off infections as well.

Lemon Oil

Lemon essential oil has strong disinfectant and antibacterial properties. This essential oil may kill food-borne bacteria, support immune function, and improve mood.

Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus essential oil comes from dried leaves of the eucalyptus tree. Australian aborigines have used eucalyptus to treat body pains, fever, congestion, and colds. There are different types of eucalyptus trees that produce different oils, such as Blue Mallee, narrow-leaved peppermint, and lemon-scented gum. Although they are different, they carry the same benefits. Eucalyptus is believed to provide an immunity boost by getting a pair of immune functions going: the innate (search-and-destroy) and the cell-mediated (record for future reference, then search and destroy) functions. Eucalyptus may also fight bacteria, preventing infections.

Clove Oil

Clove essential oil comes from the dried buds of an evergreen tree. Because the bud has a head and shaft like a nail, it’s Latin name is clavus, leading to the English name “clove.” Clove essential oil is believed to boost B-cell (search and destroy) immunity. It is believed to purify the blood by reducing toxicity. It may also increase antiviral activity in your body. The antioxidants in clove oil are thought to hunt for free-radicals, leaving your body less prone to certain diseases such as heart disease and certain types of cancer.

Cinnamon Oil

Cinnamon essential oil comes from the bark of the cinnamon plant. Cinnamon oil is said to have strong immunity boosting properties as a parasite and virus killer, an anti-inflammatory, and as a defender against blood clots. It is also regarded as a powerful antioxidant.

Making Your Own Immunity Support Blend

Essential oil blends began to be investigated because of concerns about synthetic medicines and their side effects. These essential oils individually contribute to a healthier immune system the natural way and are all included in numerous immunity boosting aromatherapy recipes. Whether you use them individually or as a powerful blend, start protecting your immune system before illness arises. Make your own Immunity Support essential oil blend by mixing the following in a dispensing jar:
  • 80 drops Clove Oil
  • 70 drops Lemon Oil
  • 40 drops Cinnamon Oil
  • 30 drops Eucalyptus Oil
  • 20 drops Rosemary Oil
This oil blend is mildly caustic, and can burn sensitive skin.  Use with caution and dilute appropriately with a carrier oil.       Sources:
